The Basics of Blackjack
Blackjack is a card game played between a player and the dealer. It uses one or more standard 52-card decks, and each card has a numerical value (a face card is worth 10, an ace is worth either 1 or 11, depending on the type of hand) as well as color. Players attempt to build a hand with values close to 21 that will beat the dealer’s hand.
Before the cards are dealt, each player must place a bet, which is placed in front of their chips on the table. The minimum and maximum bets are usually posted on the blackjack table. If a player has an ace showing, they may opt to buy insurance by placing an additional bet equal to half their original bet. The dealer then checks their hole card, which is typically a ten. If the dealer has a ten underneath, they have a Blackjack and all bets are paid out at a rate of 2 to 1.
Otherwise, the dealer will continue to play the game like normal. After all players have finished their turns, the dealer will reveal their hole card and pay out all insurance wagers if they have a Blackjack. They will also return any insurance wagers that have been made if their hand has a value of 21.
